Bhakti Lived Experience Experiment
Bhakti is the path of devotion. At its highest level, one loves a god or goddess so much that their ego entirely disappears. Hindus express this love and devotion in a variety of ways including praying, performing aarti and puja, or dressing and bathing a murti (a statue/picture where god has been invited to reside). If you are a religious person you may be practicing Bhakti on some level already! For this exercise however, you will not be showing your love and devotion towards a god or goddess, you will choose one person in your family whom you admire or has been very influential in your life and truly devote yourself to him/her/them. You will love them completely for 2 hours. Pick wisely--really think about who is truly influential in your life and why. Then think about how you can best show your love for this person during the two hour period. What is it that they would enjoy? Would they enjoy a dinner, a foot rub, saying nice things to them, writing them a letter communicating all that you are grateful for, etc. Regardless of what you do, make sure that when you are loving them, you are doing things they would love and that will help them. Very Important: Your love must be devotional and thus be directed at the person to whom you are devoted. Activities like doing your homework, cleaning your room, or doing the dishes do not count. Also, excluded are tasks your person asks you to do when they are not present or tasks that are of mutual enjoyment like going to a movie or going for a walk together.
